You may also have heard of the Cyberball experiment which offers neuroscience data showing that ‘social pain’ (i.e. the pain of exclusion or rejection) is received in the brain the same way as physical pain. Being ostracised at work, then, can have a massive impact on how we think, feel, and perform. I’m a big advocate of coaches that support employees, or mental health support like Sanctus, or ‘Stewarding Circles’ like this one at Enspiral, which appoints each person a steward whose role is to ‘look after your relationship with the group’ in whatever way you and your steward see fit.
