Your post reminded me to dig up my notes from an EQ conference I went to a few years ago where Eve Ekman was presenting research that showed when people had to watch a distressing video, and were instructed to either suppress, watch, or reappraise their emotional response, the group with the highest prolonged emotional arousal [heart rate etc] after the event was the suppress group. So this idea of "leave your emotions at the door" is actually harming how we perform at work.
As you experienced, just naming them, witnessing them, welcoming them, even, helps them us to have our feelings rather than them have us.
